Application Process

The Strong blends the best features of both history museums and children’s museums—extensive collections and high interactivity—to serve a diverse audience of children, families, adults, students, educators, scholars, and collectors. Paid and volunteer positions may be available to support the museum and its International Center for the History of Electronic Games, National Toy Hall of Fame, World Video Game Hall of Fame, Brian Sutton-Smith Library and Archives of Play, Woodbury School, and American Journal of Play.

After reviewing the available positions (below), candidates should enter The Strong’s online career center, which is provided through InfinityHR to begin the application process: build a profile, enter education and work histories, upload a resume, and add any additional information. To check the status of a completed application, candidates should log into the online career center using their user name and password.

Applying for positions via the career center website allows The Strong’s Human Resources Team to receive and review application materials in a more timely fashion than any other method of application. Facilities Manager

The Strong is looking for a Facilities Manager to oversee all aspects of the maintenance and management of the museum building, including insuring that all operations are safe, efficient, and cost effective, and meet or exceed established industry and museum standards.  This position reports to the Vice President for Finance and Facilities, and supervises the Maintenance Mechanic.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Establishes, manages and improves maintenance programs, operational processes and standards for mechanical, electrical, plumbing, physical plant and HVAC systems
  • Regularly examines facilities and evaluates elements such as HVAC, lighting, size, conditions for suitability for occupancy and preservation of collections
  • Assesses equipment needs, evaluates pricing and makes recommendations for replacement or major repairs
  • Administers, manages and supervises all aspects of repairs and maintenance of the existing facility as well as new facilities and modifications to the existing facility
  • Sources potential vendors for repairs and maintenance projects, provides specifications and bid conditions evaluates proposals and selects the appropriate vendor
  • Provides direct supervision and coordination of vendors working on site
  • Leads and develops facilities team members; prioritizes and directs daily work, manages overtime and reviews timesheets
  • Responsible for the development and maintenance of facilities capital and operating budgets
  • Maintains compliance with current OSHA regulations; ensures staff receives on-the-job technical, OSHA, and safety training
  • Keeps in compliance with local, federal and state building codes and ADA requirements
  • Establishes policies and procedures and provides support for disaster management
  • Provides on and off-hour emergency response
  • Serves as a member of the Facilities Use and Emergency Management Teams

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in the position duties listed above
  • Valid New York State Driver’s License
  • Ability to communicate effectively utilizing interpersonal skills to maintain effective relationships with staff and vendors
  • Strong project management and analytical skills
  • Ability to multi-task and handle short-term deadlines and conflicting priorities
  • Knowledge of all phases of facilities operation, maintenance and repair, planning and scheduling, federal, state and local regulation and safety practices
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and related applications
  • 2nd Class stationary engineer and/ or grade R-2 refrigeration engineer certification highly desired

Digital Conversion Technician

Part-time, 3-month

The Strong is seeking a Digital Conversion Technician for the Preservation of Endangered Media Pilot Project. Through this grant-funded project, The Strong seeks to demystify the daunting aspects of digitization by establishing an efficient, scalable, and cost-effective model for identifying and assessing endangered media at the point of acquisition and converting and preserving the content to ensure future access. This three-month, part-time position will report to the Archivist and Director of Conservation and will digitize archival materials and create metadata.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Create disk images of 3.5 and 5.25” floppy disks from the archives
  • Create appropriate metadata
  • Re-house disks in archival enclosures

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in museum studies, history, library science, social sciences, humanities, digital humanities, computer science, or related fields
  • Familiarity with MARC, Dublin Core and other metadata standards
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
  • Experience with and knowledge of digitization equipment and software
  • Experience with Digital Asset Management Systems (DAMS) and digital imaging equipment such as Kryoflux preferred
  • Familiarity with libraries, archives, or museums
